Coding

The experience of making landscape is synthesized through representation, in a set of systems that, in some way, classify, organize, and synthesize information, giving it form and translating it into a visualization (visual “formulas”, nomenclatures, symbol systems). From design, the notion of graphic nomenclature emerges, referring to the set of visual codes that allow knowledge to be organized and reconstructed (making it legible) through imagery.

From geography, the action of coding is related to taxonomy, as it refers to methods and principles aimed at classification or ordering of information.

In geography, coding manifests itself in taxonomic classification, which seeks to organize geographic units based on a hierarchical system. The definition of taxonomic categories, both geomorphological units and soil types, is carried out according to their properties, considering their origin and formation processes, and classifying them at higher levels when attributes are more general, or at lower levels when attributes are more specific and nested within the higher ones. Thus, classes, orders, groups, families, and series are identified. In this study, given the scarce precipitation and high temperatures, soils are predominantly arid, poorly developed, and lacking in organic matter. Three main soil orders are identified: mollisols, gray soils, mainly present in mountainous or Andean Plateau áreas; entisols, red soils resulting from mineral oxidation processes, typical of the Atacama Desert; and aridisols, brownish-red soils present in the coastal zone and precordillera. At the group level, we find: regosols, present in eroded terrains, particularly in arid and mountainous areas, with little soil profile development; leptosols, shallow, extremely gravelly and/or stony soils, particularly common in mountainous regions; alisols, with higher clay content in the subsurface, typically present in humid climates but also developed in the El Tatio área; and solonchaks, with high concentrations of soluble salts, found in saline areas such as the Atacama Salt Flat
